Why does the kitchen ceiling have wet patches?

September 28, 2008

On my last callout one of my customers asked me this question – my first thought was that it would be a leak under the bath, but as soon as I walked in to the bathroom I could see what the problem was.

Just to confirm my suspicions I checked under the bath for leaks and asked the customer if he knew who sealed the bath when it was fitted, he said the bath was sealed four years ago but because it started to go black last year he went over it himself.

I explained to him that the bath was not sealed properly in the first place causing damp and by putting new sealant over it this has only made the bath/sealant look cleaner not resolving the issue. The best solution now would be to remove all the sealant and have it re-sealed properly.
