This trickle of water could cost you £1,000 per year
I noticed a trickle of water in the toilet, it continued even after the cistern had filled up. So I decide it was wasting water. I wasn’t sure how much, so decided to take a measurement.
With a jug, I collected water from the leak over one minute. It came to 700ml.
I then did the same again, just to check. Again, 700ml.
Here’s how that works out:
- 700ml per minute = 42 litres per hour
- 42 litres an hour = 1.08 cubic meters per day
- United Utilities provide water at £1.37 per cubic metre, and take it away again
- At £1.17 per cubic metre. So water down the toilet costs £2.54 per cubic meter.

- 1.08 cubic metres per day = £2.74 per day
- £2.74 per day = £1,000 per year (plus ten pence)
